Hornets are large stinging insects in the wasp family. In Tennessee, the only true hornet is the European hornet. The well-known bald-faced hornet is actually a type of yellow jacket. Both build paper nests and will defend them aggressively, so hornet nests near homes, decks, and play areas should be handled with care.

How to Identify Hornets

European hornets

European hornets are about 1 to 1.5 inches long with brown and yellow-orange markings. They often nest inside hollow trees, wall voids, attics, and sheds, and unlike most wasps, they can fly at night and are attracted to porch lights.

Bald-faced hornets

Bald-faced hornets are black with white markings on the face and abdomen. They build large, gray, football-shaped paper nests that hang from tree limbs, shrubs, and eaves.

Are Hornets Dangerous?

Hornets can sting more than once, and a disturbed nest can release many defending insects at the same time. Stings are painful for anyone and can be life-threatening for people who are allergic. Never swat at a nest, spray it from close range, or try to knock it down.

When Hornets Are Most Active

Colonies start in spring with a single queen and grow through summer. Nests are largest and hornets are most defensive in late summer and early fall. Colonies die off after a hard freeze, and the old nest is not reused.

Hornet Prevention Tips

  • Check eaves, sheds, trees, and shrubs in spring while nests are still small.
  • Seal gaps in siding, soffits, and attic vents to keep hornets out of wall voids.
  • Keep trash cans closed and clean up fallen fruit.
  • Call a professional for any nest near doors, walkways, or play areas.

Hornet FAQs

Should I remove a hornet nest myself?

It is not recommended. Hornets defend their nests in large numbers, and over-the-counter sprays often do not reach nests hidden in walls or high in trees. A licensed technician has the protective gear and products to remove nests safely.

Will hornets come back to the same nest?

No. Hornets do not reuse old nests, but a new queen may build nearby next year if the area stays attractive, so sealing entry points matters.
